Two hours outside Coulommiers, Kingdom of France
Youâre an idiot.
Jeremy wasnât sure how many times he had called himself that, or variations thereof, but it was more than he could count. The storm was setting in, and he had made little progress, his ribs making it difficult to set a good pace, his breathing shallow from the tight bandages, and the road increasingly covered in heavy snow.
His horse could only do so much.
And so could he.
He had to find shelter. There was no denying that now, yet he refused to go backward. He had left the last town at least an hour ago, and another had to be along the road soon, but he was rapidly getting weaker, and needed what strength he had left to set up camp and get a fire started, otherwise heâd die for sure.
The latest gust of wind suddenly stopped, everything settling for a brief moment, and Jeremy smiled at what was revealed by the good Lord above.
A barn.
Or at least some of one.
He turned off the road, the remains of a burned-out house nearby indicating the property was abandoned, but a barn in still reasonable shape sat nearby. He dismounted and opened the door, smiling at the sight. Four wallsâor three and a halfâmost of a roof, and some discarded hay.
He led the horse inside then closed the door, the bite of the wind instantly reduced. He unpacked his mount, leading her to the hay, then set to starting a fire with the supplies provided at the commandry. Within short order, he had a small fire going, then kept feeding it with scraps of wood lying about, before stoking it as best he could for the night. He thawed some snow for both him and the horse, and ate as many of his provisions as he could manage before finally giving in to the pain and cold, lying as close to the fire as he could, praying the Lord would deliver him from his own stupidity.
